Elastoplastic Deformation and Fracture Behavior of Cr-Coated Zr-4 Alloys for Accident Tolerant Fuel Claddings

In situ tensile tests and crystal plasticity finite element modeling (CPFEM) were used to study the deformation cracking behaviors of Cr-coated Zr-4 alloys for accident tolerant fuel claddings under tension. Based on experimental results, vertical cracks in coating generally initiated from interface between substrate, expanded top surface coating. addition, large deformation, also resulted interfacial that tips propagated along interface. According CPFEM, mainly caused by substantial stress concentration at coating/substrate grain boundaries Cr The preferential crack initiation was related strain localization associated with orientation variation mismatch.
